World Ovarian Cancer Day

As you may know, Crystal was Diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in 2019 and lost her battle earlier this year. May 8th is World Ovarian Cancer day (as well as her Grandpa’s birthday.)

Taken from Crystal’s Facebook Post in 2020

“Tomorrow, May 8th, has always been a special day because it is my Grandpa Udy's birthday!! Every year we would celebrate his birthday and Mother's Day at the same time . He has been gone almost 15 years, but he is constantly in my thoughts and I know he's been by my side as I fight this battle.

Anyway, how fitting that just last week I realized World Ovarian Cancer Day is on May 8th every year”

What is World Ovarian Cancer Day?

Established in 2013 by a group of leaders from ovarian cancer advocacy organizations around the world, May 8 – World Ovarian Cancer Day, is the one day of the year we globally raise our voices in solidarity in the fight against ovarian cancer.

This year we would like to educate you on Ovarian Cancer with a bit of information on it.

5 Key Facts

1 - All women are at risk of ovarian cancer

2 - Awareness of the early warning signs of the disease could save lives

3 - Diagnosis at an early stage vastly improves a woman’s change of survival

4 - Ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at a late stage

5 - Many women mistakenly believe the cervical smear test (Pap test) will detect ovarian cancer.

The truth is, if Crystal and I would have known about 1-4 we may have caught it earlier and had a better chance to fight it. Most people diagnosed find it by accident or through another issue. Crystal was having kidney pain because the cancer was pinching her ureter, the tube that runs from your kidney to your bladder. When she was diagnosed she was stage 3C which means it was as bad as it can get without spreading throughout her body.

Please, take the time to get a check-up. There are a lot of tests that can be done to find it early. You just have to be specific in what you ask for with your Doctor.

In honor of World Ovarian Cancer Day, we have introduced a new shirt to the shop. Like always, all proceeds go to the Crystal Dezember Memorial Scholarship Fund, but this one is only going to be available for a limited time.
